Description: This song began as an 8 bar drum sequence with piano and bass. The song has a long opening which builds with guitar and ghostly background vocals that set the stage for the story to unfold. The main character finds himself suffering alone in the hospital with an ever worsening case of Covid-19. The ghostly vocals end up being the cries of a woman in the room next door as she fights for her life and calls for her loved ones especially someone named Gene. Our protagonist describes his conditions and pleads to the listener to please call and check up on him as he watches conditions deteriorate around him. This song is dedicated to my Uncle Charles Houston who died alone in the hospital from Covid-19. Dr. Dre type heavy beat meets Janes Addiction guitars with an early Peter Gabriel type story lyric. (No one cares Ive seen violations No one cares Can You hear me Its just after dark Ive seen violations No one is there Can you call me?) No one can come To visit us here No one can come Because of the fear Its all on the news and Its all in our heads Some of us dying Right here in our beds Can you call me? Is this the rest of my life? They wipe off the tables They wipe off the floor They wipe off the keys that they take from my door So now we peer Through plastic veneer And wipe up the finger tip streaks From the tears The lady in the next room Keeps calling for Gene In between her coughs And in between her screams The people in blue They surround her bed Keep treating her flu But soon shell be dead Can you call me? Is this the rest of my life? They tell me to wear it But this mask hurts my face And not breathing in Seems like my only escape The corridors filled with nurses and pills And insurance agents adjusting their bills And the lady next door Just got put on a vent Her screams have stopped Outside theres a tent And everyone seems So scared and so frantic But we manage to hold it Just below panic Can You Call Me? Is this the rest of my life?
